The Decorah Viking boys swim team did well at their own quadrangular Thursday

The Decorah Viking boys swim team hosted its own quadrangular Thursday night at the Luther College Aquatics Center.
The Vikings took first place finishes in five of the 11 events, with second place finishes in three of the remaining events. That gave the Vikings a score of 192 points for the meet.
Decorah's 200 yard Medley Relay team of Drew Chamberlain, Isaac Knaack, Gus Grmistad and Ryan Lubahn started the meet by finishing second, with a time of 1:46.91--less than three-tenths of a second behind Vinton-Shellsburg.
Chamberlain then swam in the 200 yard freestyle and took first place, finishing in 1:55.81. Grimstad followed by taking first in the 200 Individual Medley, finishing in 2:02.62.
Later in the meet, Gus Grimstad came back to finish first in the 100 yard butterfly, in a time of 54.69 seconds. Lubahn then got into the individual events by finishing second in the 100 yard freestyle, with a time of 56.09 seconds. The Vikings' Dominic Bigalk took first in the 500 yard freestyle, finishing in 5:24.62. Chamberlain and Knaack swam in the 100 yard backstroke, with Chamberlain taking second with a time of 58.97 seconds and Knaack finishing third with a time of 1:02.26.
That set the stage for the final event of the event--the 400 yard freestyle relay. The Viking team of Drew Chamberlain, Simon Kutz, Gareth Sweet and Gus Grimstad finished first with a time of 3:35.61, earning 18 points. Decorah's second team of James VanderVelden, Mason Cote, Isaac Ericson and Dominic Bigalk finished fourth with a time of 4:09.15, adding another 10 points to the score by the Vikings.
The Decorah boys swim team is now taking a break for the holidays and will resume competition on Tuesday, January 5th, against Vinton-Shellsburg at the Iowa Braille School swimming pool in Vinton.
