Decorah girls swim team does well at the State Meet

All season long, the Decorah Viking girls swim team has been swimming against some of the most talented swim teams in Eastern Iowa and holding their own.  On Friday and Saturday, the Vikings got a chance to swim against the best swimmers in the entire state of Iowa and did well.

The Vikings qualified to swim in eight of the events at State, with many of Decorah's swimmers finishing with their best times of the year.  The Vikings finished with 12 points, which was good for 26th place.  Their points came in the 200 yard freestyle relay, where the team of sophomore Paige Werner, sophomore Maeley Nafzger, sophomore Katerina Kovarik and sophomore Julia Alberts finished in 1:40.76--good for 11th place out of 32 teams.

On Friday, Decorah diver Brinley Krivachek finished with 173.65 points, which put her in 30th place.

On Saturday, junior Margaret Rhodes swam the 100 yard butterfly in 1:00.95 and finished in 26th place.  Julia Alberts finished the 100-yard butterfly in 54.60 seconds, good for 18th place, while Paige Werner finished the 100 yard freestyle in 55.16 seconds, good for 23rd place.  Julia Alberts finished the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:00.15, good for 23rd place.  Margaret Rhodes finished the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:22.59, good for 21st place.

The relay team of Paige Werner, junior Grace Bachelder, sophomore Katerina Kovarik and Julia Alberts finished the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:45.68, good for 19th place.

With a team made up of sophomore and juniors, the Decorah Vikings look good for next year.  Head Coach Allie Bachelder said after the meet, "It was a great way to finish a very successful season.  These girls are incredible young ladies in and out of the pool."
