Viking boys cross country teams have qualified for State 17 years in a row, including this year

Decorah High School has now sent a boys cross country team to the State Meet for 37 years. This ties for a record among all the cross country teams in Iowa.

The performance by this year's squad at Fort Dodge resulted in a 6th place finish among the 15 teams competing.  Individually, senior Brady Hogan led the Vikings, finishing 4th with a time of 16:12.4.  Another senior, Noah Lovelace, finished 53rd with a time of 17:39.2.

The good news for 2020-2021 is that the five other runners at the State Meet were juniors and should return next season.  Arlo Hayes earned 28th place with a time of 17:19.3; Hogan Smith finished 38th with a time of 17:23.6; Bennett Schutte was 50th with a time of 17:37.9; Izaak Eichinger finished 70th with a time of 17:50.8 and Larsson Shockey finished 71st with a time of 17:53.1.

Said Viking head coach Brad Johansen, "I am always amazed how each year the athletes step up to the challenge of upholding this tradition of running excellence.  The entire community should be proud of the work they do as students and athletes."  Johansen singled out Hogan and Lovelace for special praise, saying, "Thank you to the seniors, they led with great purpose.  They will be missed."
