The Decorah Viking volleyball team on Tuesday night just couldn't get over the hump in their match against Waverly-Shell Rock to determine the regular season Northeast Iowa Conference champion.

A point here and a point there which got away led to a three set loss to the Go-Hawks.  Decorah lost by  three points, 25-22, in the first set and by two points, 25-23, in the second set before dropping a 25-14 decision in the third set.

"I can't fault our girls effort at all, they have worked hard all year (and) had put themselves in a great spot to challenge for the NEIC title," says head coach Gina Holthaus.  "We had a great game plan and the girls executed it well, we simply came up short to a good team. Emma , Kallie and Chloe dug the ball very well and gave our hitters lots of opportunities," she adds.

This is the highest finish for Decorah since 2007.  Says Holthaus, "I just can't say enough about this group, the hard work they have put in, the adherence to team rules, following guidelines to stay healthy and the great attitudes that they have are just fantastic."

Waverly-Shell Rock is now 31-8 on the season, while Decorah is 15-8.
