The Decorah Viking girls swim team qualifies for eight events at the State Meet

The Decorah Viking girls swim team had an outstanding day Saturday at the IGHSAU Regional at Dubuque Hempstead High School, qualifying for eight events at this coming weekend's State Meet.

The Vikings finished fourth out of eight teams with 280.5 points--just ten points behind third place Dubuque Wahlert and ahead of Dubuque Senior HS, Dubuque Hempstead, Waterloo and Vinton-Shellsburg.  Cedar Rapids Kennedy won the Regional with 416.5 points.

Decorah diver Brinley Krivachek finished with 380.30 points in the diving competition--good for fourth place at the Regional and a spot at the State Meet.

In relay events, the Vikings' 200-yard freestyle relay team of Paige Werner, Maeley Nefzger, Katerina Kovarik and Julia Alberts finished fourth with a time of 1:43.17.  The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Paige Werner, Grace Bachelder, Katerina Kovarik and Julia Alberts finished fifth with a time of 3:48.80.  Both relay teams qualified for a spot at State.

In individual events, Julia Alberts qualified for State with a fifth place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, with a time of 2:00.15.  Margaret Rhodes qualified for State with a time of 1:00.95 and a sixth place finish in the 100-yard butterfly.  Alberts also qualified for state in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing in fourth place with a time of 54.60 seconds.  Paige Werner also qualified in the same event, finishing seventh with a time of 55.19 seconds.  Margaret Rhodes qualified in a second event--the 500-yard freestyle--by finishing fourth with a time of 5:22.59.

The State Swim Meet with be held Friday and Saturday at the Marshalltown YMCA.
