Decorah Viking football team goes to 5-0 with 49-0 victory at Charles City

For the second Friday night in a row, the Decorah Viking football team registered a lopsided victory, beating the Charles City Comets 49-0 Friday night in Charles City.
The Vikings marched 77 yards on their first possession, with Brody Young's 72-yard run leading two plays later to a 1-yard touchdown on a Briggs Duwe quarterback sneak and the Vikings had a 7-0 lead. Keenan Tyler later recovered a fumble, but the Vikings could not convert on fourth down and Charles City got the football back. The Comets marched down the field and looked poised to score, but fumbled in the end zone and Decorah recovered to preserve its 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Vikings drove downfield and scored on Nicolas Einck's 3-yard run to take a 14-0 lead with 10:30 left in the first half. Charles City late in the second quarter drove down to Decorah territory, but could not convert on a fourth down play. That led to the key plays of the game, when the Vikings went to a hurry-up offense with 1:47 left in the half. With time about to expire, Nicolas Einck scored his second touchdown from 2 yards out to take a 21-0 lead at halftime.
That cemented the Vikings' lead and Decorah looked impressive in the second half. Briggs Duwe hit Kody Bodensteiner for a 17-yard touchdown in the third quarter, then hit Keenan Tyler on a 12-yard touchdown pass to make it 35-0 at the end of the quarter.
The fourth quarter saw substitutions among the Viking players, but Decorah kept rolling, with Keenan Tyler scoring on an 11-yard run. then giving the football to Nicolas Einck on the highlight play of the game--a 68-yard touchdown run that saw him outrun all the Comet defenders.
Decorah ended with 464 yards on offense and a shutout on defense. Charles City had a few long passes, but penalties and fumbles prevented the Comets from scoring.
The Vikings will next host the Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks on Friday night for Homecoming.
