The season begins with a victory for the Decorah Viking girls swim team

The Decorah Viking girls swim team got its fall season off to a good start Thursday night by beating Mason City, 114-71, in a home meet at the Luther Aquatic Center.

The Vikings took first place in eight events.  Katernia Kovarik won the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:08.86.  Paige Werner was first in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 25.99 seconds, while Naeley Nefzger finished second with a time of 26.61.  Margaret Rhodes won the 100 yard butterfly in a time of 1:03.22, while Emily Voyna finished second in 1:03.54.  Paige Werner took first in the 100 yard freestyle, finishing in 56.97 seconds.  Emily Voyna was first in the 100 yard backstroke, finishing in 1:13.29.

The Vikings had three out of the four entries in the diving competition.  Sophomore Brinley Krivachek earned 223.00 points to take first place, while Paige Lange finished third and Kailyn O'Gara was fourth.

The Vikings won two of the relay events at the meet.  The team of Hannah Franzen, Kiana Folkedahl, Maeley Nefsger and Emily Voyna finished in 1:47.04 to win 8 points in the 200 yard freestyle relay.  In the 400 yard freestyle relay, it was the team of Julia Alberts, Katerina Kovarik, Margaret Rhodes and Paige Werner which took first place, finishing in 3:54.31.

The Vikings will next face Waterloo East in Waterloo on Saturday, September 12th.
