The Decorah Viking girls track team is off and running--literally. The Vikings competed in the Dickinson Relays at the University of Northern Iowa on Monday, their first chance of the season to run at a competitive meet.
With many large high schools competing, Decorah more than held its own. In the 200 meter dash, Decorah's Brooke Berns finished first with a time of 26.45 seconds. Decorah's Ambria Pipho cleared 4 feet 8 inches in the high jump, good for 20th place. Decorah's relay teams also did well, with the 4x800 meter relay team finishing 17th with a time of 10:43.83; the 4x200 meter relay team finishing 24th with a time of 1:55.07; and the 4x400 meter relay team finishing 28th with a time of 4:33.73.
In other results, Decorah's Sami Mount finished 91st in the 60 meter dash with a time of 8.75 seconds; Ellie Luzum finished 77th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:10.00; Rebecca Anderson finished 38th in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:35.00; Kallie Mincks finished 69th in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 10.83; and Aanaiya Weston finished 68th in the shot put with a toss of 30 feet 4 inches.
Said girls track co-head coach Cristy Nimrod, "The girls competed well last night. We had a few nerves but they were able to use those nerves to compete. We are looking forward to continuing to grow as the season progresses."
Decorah will next participate at Iowa State University in Ames next Monday before returning to Decorah to take part in the Luther College Invitational on Saturday, March 21st.
