The Decorah Viking boys swim team had an amazing day Saturday at Districts at Linn-Mar High School in Marion.  Swimming against a number of larger schools, the Decorah team qualified for the State Swim Meet in seven out of eleven events.

The Vikings will have two relay teams and five individual swimmers at the State Meet this coming weekend at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.  Only the top 24 entries in the state qualify for this tournament--and Decorah will be right there.

Decorah swimmer Gus Grimstad will be seeded 7th in the 100 yard butterfly event after finishing third at Linn-Mar with a time of 51.36 seconds.  Grimstad will also be seeded 11th in the 100 yard backstroke, after finishing in 53.22 second on Saturday.  Decorah's 400 yard freestyle relay team of Cole Huebner, Bradyn Hook, Jackson Penny and Grimstad finished fourth at Linn-Mar with a time of 3:18.90 and will be seeded 12th at Iowa City.

Another relay team--the 200 yard medley relay--will be seeded 13th at Iowa City after finishing with a time of 1:39.25.  The team consisted of Drew Chamberlain, Jackson Penny, Gus Grimstad and Cole Huebner.  Jackson Penny will be seeded 15th at State after finishing in 1:01.44 in the 100 yard breaststroke at Linn-Mar.  He will also swim in the 200 yard individual medley, where his time of 2:00.78 was good for 18th place in the state.  Finally, Drew Chamberlain's time of 4:55.90 in the 500 yard freestyle was good for a 21st seed at the state tournament.

One Decorah team competing at Linn-Mar missed qualifying for State by less than one second.  The 200 yard freestyle relay team of Cole Huebner, Bradyn Hook, Isaac Dixon and Ryan Lubahn finished in 1:32.71.

When the District Meet ended Saturday at Linn-Mar, the Vikings had earned 219.5 points--good for fourth place, ahead of Cedar Rapids Washington, Burlington, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Keokuk.

Said head coach Laura Storlie, "Many personal bests and state qualifying times.  I am very proud of every member of our team."
