Decorah Viking girls swim team qualifies for 7 of 12 events at the State Meet

When the 2019 Iowa High School Girls Swim Meet takes place this coming weekend in Marshalltown, Decorah will be well represented. The Viking swim team at Saturday's Regional Meet at Linn-Mar High School qualified entries in seven of the 12 events at the State Meet.
The Viking 400 yard freestyle relay team of freshman Paige Werner, sophomore Emily Voyna, freshman Julia Alberts and senior Emma Bachelder finished second at the Regional with a time of 3:40.70. Bachelder also finished second individually in the 200 yard freestyle and finished third in the 100 yard breaststroke.
The Viking 200 yard freestyle relay team of Werner, Voyna, freshman Maeley Nefzger and Bachelder finished third with a time of 1:41.01. Emily Voyna finished fourth individually in the 100 yard butterfly, while Paige Werner took fifth place in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 55.35 seconds. The Vikings' 200 yard medley relay team of Voyna, junior Mia Smedsrud, Alberts and Werner finished seventh and also qualified for the State Meet.
As a team, Decorah was 4th out of 9 teams at Linn-Mar, trailing Iowa City West, Linn-Mar and Iowa City High, but beating Cedar Rapids Jefferson, Tipton, Vinton-Shellsburg, Williamsburg and Keokuk.
Preliminary heats of the State Swim Meet will be held Friday afternoon, with the State Swimming Finals held on Saturday.
