The top 10 runners on Decorah's boys cross country team had the opportunity to race with 570 others on Saturday at the Roy Griak Invitaional at the University of Minnesota's Les Bolstad Golf Course. Decorah placed 48th out of a talented field of 62 teams.
The race started precariously as 5 of Decorah's 10 runners found themselves on the ground, tangled up with other runners who had fallen in front of them. The boys bounced back into action quickly and fought hard to regain their position among the masses.
Junior Brady Hogan led the Vikings with a time of 17:03 and finished in 70th place overall. Senior Spencer Peterson ran a 18:08 and finished in 249th place. Next for Decorah were sophomore Izaak Eichinger (307th) and junior Noah Lovelace (309th) who both crossed the finish line at 18:25. Sophomore Bennett Schutte ran a 18:42 (361st) , Willem Hawley ran a 18:44 (365th), Jojo Seo ran a 18:52 (388th), Hogan Smith ran a 18:59 (411th), and Sam Robinson ran a 19:02 (421st).
Head coach Brad Johansen says, "I am incredibly proud of how we handled adversity and got ourselves back into the race. This is a very tough group of young men."
The Vikings will travel to Epworth on Thursday to compete in another large and very competitive meet at Western Dubuque High School.
