The Decorah Viking girls swimming and diving team continues to compete against bigger schools at weekend swim meets. The Vikings traveled to Iowa City Saturday for the Little Hawk Invite at Iowa City High. Decorah finished 7th out of 8 teams, but had a lot of bright spots.
First, of course, was the performance of the team's leader, senior Emma Bachelder. Swimming against athletes from larger schools, she finished second in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.52 and third in the 200 yard free style with a time of 1:57.93.
Next was the performance of the Viking relay teams. The Viking 440 yard Freestyle Relay team of freshman Paige Werner, sophomore Emily Voyna, freshman Julia Alberts and Bachelder finished 6th with a time of 3:52.42. The Decorah 200 yard Freestyle Relay team of Bachelder, Voyna, freshman Maeley Nefzger and Werner finished 6th with a time of 1:44.92. The 200 yard Medley Relay team of Voyna, junior Ella Hermeier, Alberts and Nefzger finished 7th with a time of 2:02.14.
A number of those talented underclassmen also did well in individual events. Paige Werner scored two points with her 26.93 time in the 50 yard freestyle, then scored three points with a time of 59.01 second in the 100 yard freestyle. Alberts finished 14th and scored 3 points with a time of 1:08.68 in the 100 yard butterfly. Freshman Katerina Kovarik scored 4 points with her time of 5:45.81 in the 500 yard freestyle, while sophomore Margaret Rhodes scored 6 points in the same event with a time of 5:40.79.
The Vikings will continue to swim and dive against larger schools, traveling to Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School this Saturday and to Cedar Falls on October 5th before holding the last home meet of the season, Thursday, October 10th at 5:00 p.m. at the Luther College swimming pool against Vinton-Shellsburg.
