Each year the Rich Engel Cross Country Meet in Cedar Falls brings together the top teams across Eastern Iowa. Thursday was no exception--and the Decorah Viking girls cross country team held its own against teams from Cedar Rapids, Dubuque and the Cedar River Valley.
Decorah finished 9th out of 21 teams, finishing behind three Dubuque squads and two Iowa City squads, but ahead of four Cedar Rapids squads.
The Vikings were led by freshman Rebecca Anderson, who was 28th in the 150 runner field, finishing in 21:15. Other Viking finishers were junior Leila Johnson 58th with a time of 22:05; senior Meg Sessions 60th with a time of 22:12; junior Samantha See 66th with a time of 22:24; senior Kalea Oftedahl 70th with a time of 22:29; senior Annette Leschensky 76th with a time of 22:35; and senior Britta Swanson 88th with a time of 23:05. All seven Decorah runners finished within less than two minutes of one another.
"I was pleased with our performance tonight," said head coach Cristy Nimrod. She added, "We put in a hard week of quality practices and the girls responded with hard runs and courage in a lot of situations."
