The high school golf season is in the spring in Iowa. But for some golfers, the competition continues into the summertime. That's true for Decorah Viking golfer Jay Fjelstul, who spent the summer entering tournaments and came away with numerous titles.
Jay played in seven Iowa PGA Junior Tour tournaments over the summer. He won the 36-hole Cedar Valley Junior Championship in Cedar Falls in June in an 8-hole playoff. In the Iowa Junior Open at Blue Top Ridge in Riverside, he tied for third with a 81-70=151. He finished 11th at the Junior PGA Championship at Gates Park in Waterloo, shooting a 75-73. The tournament also included his first hole-in-one, which came on the 180-yard 17th hole.
Jay also played seven Waterloo Junior Golf Association tournaments, winning four of them. He won with a 70 at Irv Warren in Waterloo; with a 68 at Prairie Links in Waverly; with a 70 at Gates Park in Waterloo and at the Tour Championship at Irv Warren with a 71. He was named Player of the Year for the WJGA for the third year in a row.
Finally, Jay played in two Hurricane Junior Golf Tour tournaments, a nation-wide junior golf tour, and won both of them. He won the Minnesota Summer Junior Open at Oak Marsh G.C. in Oakdale, Minnesota with a 66-73=139 and he won the Minneapolis Summer Junior Open at The Summit G.C. in Canon Falls, Minnesota with a 77-81=158.
