Logan Halverson was a frequent target of Briggs Duwe's passes, gaining 75 yards on six catches

The Decorah Viking football team led Cedar Rapids Xavier at halftime on Friday night--something hardly any other team has been able to do during Xavier's current 28-game winning streak.  The Knights used a 22-point third quarter to beat Decorah 36-14, but the game was competitive for awhile.

Decorah started by forcing Xavier to kick after four downs as the game started.  Viking quarterback Briggs Duwe then hooked up on three pass plays to Logan Halverson to take the Vikings to Xavier's 9 yard line.  Duwe took it from there, running the ball into the end zone to give the Vikings a 7-0 lead.  A 25-yard field goal attempt by Xavier with 52 seconds left in the first quarter went wide left and Decorah took a 7-0 lead into the second quarter.

Another Xavier field goal attempt from 30 yards out was no good in the early minutes of the second quarter, but Xavier later took over the ball at their own 40 yard line and, thanks to two pass interference penalties on the Vikings, drove to the 3-yard line of Decorah with under a minute left in the half.  A 3-yard pass from Tyler Dupont to Mac Mahurin with 37 seconds left tied the game at 7-7.

But when the Saints kicked off to Decorah, Cael Luzum ran the football 47 yards to Xavier's 48-yard line.  Two pass interference penalties on Xavier put the football on Xavier's 16 yard line.  With less than 7 seconds left in the half, Duwe found Dawson Palmer with a pass and Palmer ran the football into the end zone, giving Decorah a 14-7 halftime lead.

Unfortunately, when the second half started, Decorah running back Andrew Magner fumbled the football on Decorah's own 20 yard line.  DuPont ran the football into the end zone a few plays later.  DuPont also found Mitchell Helmkamp in the end zone on the 2-point conversion--and the Knights led 15-14.  They would add two more touchdowns in the third quarter, including one on DuPont's 3-yard keeper as time expired, to take a 29-14 lead going into the fourth quarter.  Xavier scored one more time on a 5-yard run by Jack Lux with 3:10 left in the game to make the final score 36-14.

For the night, the Vikings ended with 127 yards passing and 22 net yards rushing.  The Vikings were led on defense by Galen Iverson, who had 6 solo tackles and 6 assists.

Decorah is now 0-2 on the season and faces another tough test next Friday, when it hosts Western Dubuque, the #1-ranked team in Class 3A.
