The Decorah Viking freshman football team had difficulty getting their offense going Thursday night against a tough Cedar Rapids Xavier defense. The Vikings had only 50 yards rushing and passing, with Brady Stille earning 16 yards on 9 carries and Ben Wymer gaining 24 yards on 10 carries.
Xavier scored two first quarter touchdowns to make it 14-0 and pushed for a third score, but the Viking freshmen had a strong goalline stand at the end of the first quarter to prevent 7 points but, more importantly, to stop Xavier from getting a touchdown and kicking off with the wind at their back again. Said head coach Scott Pierce, "Our field position improved after this stretch but we were already in a hole."
The Vikings trailed 28-0 at halftime before losing by a final score of 35-0.
The freshman team travels to Western Dubuque next Thursday for a 6:00 p.m. game.
