The Luther College football team will open its 2019 season Saturday in Whittier, California. The Norse will face the Poets of Whittier College, a member of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, in the first ever meeting between these two schools.
Luther Head Coach Caleb Padilla will again have a young squad--of the 83 players on the opening day roster, 75 percent will be sophomores and freshmen.
The leadership of captains Ian Kuykendall, Travis Vargas, Tyler Sefried and Chris Pinkney will be key to the Norse success this season.
Kuykendall and Vargas combined for over 1,147 of Luther's 2,139 yards on the ground last year. Kuydendall will be the full time starter at quarterback, while Vargas is the top returning running back from a year ago. Sefried and Pickney are two of six starters returning on defense, with Sefried on the defensive line and Pickney at defensive back.
Following its trip to California, Luther will wrap up its non-conference schedule next Saturday, September 14th, by hosting St. Olaf College at 2:00 p.m. Not only will this be the home opener, but it will also be the annual Fall Community Day Picnic
Luther begins its American Rivers Conference schedule at home against Wartburg College on Saturday, September 21st at 1:00 p.m. The Knights are the defending league champions and were picked to finish first in the league's preseason coaches' poll.
