The Decorah Viking girls swim team faced some tough competition over the Labor Day weekend and didn't blink. The Vikings finished second at the Dubuque Senior Invitational, behind Dubuque Wahlert, but ahead of Dubuque Senior, Dubuque Hempstead and Platteville/Lancaster. Wahlert won the invitational with 659 points, followed by Decorah with 556 points, Dubuque Senior with 431 points, Dubuque Hempstead with 316 points and Platteville/Lancaster with 216 points.
Emma Bachelder led the Vikings by winning the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:14.41 and by finishing second in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 54.59 seconds.
The 200 yard freestyle relay team of Paige Werner, Kianna Folkedahl, Maely Nefzger and Bachelder finished second with a time of 1:46.26. The 400 yard freestyle relay team also finished second. Werner, Katerina Kovarik, Emily Voyna and Bachelder finished in 3:54.95.
Third place finishes were turned in by Maddie Putnam in the diving competition and by Paige Werner in the 50 yard freestyle, with a time of 26.77 seconds.
"Finishing second at this Invitational was a huge accomplishment," said head coach Allie Bachelder. "We had two meets back-to-back with a hard practice in between and they raced very well for being tired," added Bachelder.
The Viking swimmers and divers will wrap up a very busy six-day stretch by competing Tuesday night at Cedar Falls against Cedar Falls and Dubuque Hempstead.
