Northeast Swim Team does well at State

Northeast Swim Team members from the Decorah area did well at the 2019 Long Course State Championship over the weekend at Mercer Park Aquatic Center in Iowa City. Participating swimmers had to qualify in previous meets to swim individual events

Aiden Gerst made the podium numerous times, including 5th place for his Boys 11-12 800 Meter Freestyle, 200 Meter Backstroke, 50 Meter Butterfly, and 1500 Meter Freestyle. In addition, he placed 6th on the 400 Meter Freestyle, 7th in the 50 Meter Freestyle and 100 Meter Freestyle, and 8th in the 100 Meter Backstroke.  Those performances scored 115.5 points for NST.  Aiden also earned four AAA times, which qualify him to compete at Central Zones in Fargo, North Dakota, in the 200, 400, 800, and 1500 Meter Freestyle Races.

Jaylee Vobr placed 11th in the Girls' 11-12 400 Meter Individual Medley with a time of 6:17.00, dropping 14.20 seconds off her personal best time.  She had other impressive time drops, including the 800 Meter freestyle, where she dropped more than a minute and placed 10th with a time of 11:07.13. Jaylee placed 14th in the 100 Meter Butterfly, 12th in the 400 Meter Freestyle, and 11th in the 1500 Meter Freestyle with a time of 21.30.42. She scored 27 points for NST.

Anna Knaack placed 13th in the Girls 10 and under 400 Meter Freestyle with a time of 6.20.10 and 16th in the 100 Meter Backstroke with a time of 1:37.14.

Cael LaFrentz placed 16th in the 11-12 Meter Freestyle with a time of 1:10.58.

Katerina Kovarik of Waukon scored 27 points for NST by placing 11th in the Girls' 13-14 800 Meter free with a time of 10:17.94, 12th in the 100 Meter Breaststroke with a time of 1:24.78, and 12th in the 200 Meter Breaststroke with a time of 3:05.48. She also placed 8th in the 1500 Meter Freestyle, which she completed in 20.10.43.

Topher Bigalk of Howard County participated in 13-14 events. He placed, 15th in the 100 Meter Backstroke with a time of 1:13.20, and 16th in the 100 Meter Breaststroke with a time of 1:20.91.

Jackson Penny placed 15th in the Men's 200 Meter Breaststroke with a time of 2:50.30.

Cole Huebner swam in the Men's 200 Butterfly final, and swam a personal best of 2.28.08.

Julia Albert also participated at state in 100 Meter Butterfly and Paige Werner swam the 50 Meter Freestyle.

Emma Bachelder of Decorah also swam and had a very successful meet, earning 6th place for the 200 Meter Individual Medley, 13th in the 50 Meter Freestyle with a time of 28.35, 10th in the 200 Meter Freestyle with a time of 2.10.98, 7th in the 100 Meter Breaststroke with a time of 1:17.44, and 9th in the 100 Meter Freestyle with a time of 1:00.75. Emma swims with the Decorah Area High School Girl's team and DMSY.

Also over the weekend in Iowa City, a relay team of Topher Bigalk, Dom Bigalk, Gareth Sweet and Simon Kutz competed.
