In their final regular season home game, the Decorah High School Boys Soccer team's seniors went out with a bang, winning 2-0 over the Waverly Go-Hawks during senior recognition night.
Senior Bryce Bockman started off scoring for the Vikes with an assist from senior Simon Hadley, and junior Owen Bruening scored his second goal of the season. Ninth-grader Brayden Reiser stepped into the goal for the Vikings, turning away eight shots and coming away with his first varsity solo shut-out. His effort was solidified by the team defending from the back line of Bruening and Hadley, seniors Lars Marquardt, Austin Bulman and Mason Heim, juniors Joseph Seo and Mitchell Leschensky, and ninth grader Brody Young.
"We're very proud of who these young men already are and who they're shaping up to be, both on and off the field," said Coach Julie Shockey Trytten. "That we were able to start all eight of our seniors is something not all teams are able to do, and our guys really stepped up to the challenge and exceeded our expectations."
The Junior Varsity squad kept their winning-streak alive with a solid 4-2 win over Waverly. With an early penalty kick in the fourth minute, the Vikings were on the board first with a finish from ninth grader Trysten Finholt. Ninth grader Larsson Shockey put the second goal in the side netting with an assist from ninth grader Ryan Johanningmeier. Finholt knocked in the third goal with an assist from senior Jack Berlage. Waverly also put two in the net to go into halftime 3-2. In the first five minutes of the second half, ninth grader Garrick Smith sealed the win for the Vikes, assisted by ninth grader Arlo Hayes. "JV started well, then allowed Waverly to make the game interesting before putting the game to bed in the second half," said Coach Ben Shockey.
Decorah returns to action Thursday with their last regular season match against North Fayette Valley. The games will be held at Upper Iowa University; Varsity at 5:00 p.m. and Junior Varsity at 6:30 p.m. The Vikes kick-off post season play next Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at home (opponent to be determined).
