The Decorah High School boys soccer team improved their record to 12-5 on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Dubuque Hempstead.

"Hempstead played their cards early and showed they were dangerous with a direct attack up the middle. We made some small adjustments on the fly defensively that the guys picked up on immediately which really took the sting out of Hempstead's offensive attack. Once our defense settled in, that allowed us to gain a little more composure on the ball on the offensive side of things," said Coach Ben Shockey.

Junior Owen Bruening opened up scoring for the Vikes with a zinger of a left-footed finish in the 18-yard box; junior Galen Iverson had the assist.  Beau Hawley earned the second goal with a beauty of a free kick.  Sophomore goalkeeper Peter Wilson made six saves to record the shutout.

Said Coach Julie Shockey Trytten, "We played great team defense, kept our composure on the ball and had good movement off the ball."

After a slow start to their match, the Viking Junior Varsity squad notched two goals in the second half for a 2-0 win over Dubuque Hempstead.

The Viking boys soccer teams travel to Upper Iowa University Thursday for their last regular season matches, facing North Fayette Valley, with the varsity game at 5:00 p.m. and the JV game at 6:30 p.m.
