The Decorah Viking boys soccer team won two out of its three games Saturday at the Waverly Tournament, taking third place in the tournament.

Decorah started strong with a 2-0 shutout of Clear Lake.  The Vikings got early goals from Gabe Austin, assisted by senior Bryce Bockman, and from junior Galen Iverson, with assists from 9th grader Brody Young and senior Sawyer Vanden Brink.

The Vikings next took on South Tama.  After giving up an early goal, the Vikings battled back with a beauty of a goal from junior Willem Hawley.  However, South Tama scored late in the second half for the victory.

Decorah battled back with a 2-0 victory over Spencer in its final game of the day.  Galen Iverson scored two goals in the first five minutes and the Vikings played with the lead for the rest of the game, making frequent substitutions to get the whole team experience in playing against high-level competition.

Decorah split its junior varsity squad into two teams, with the Red Team notching 1-0 and 5-0 victories and the Blue Team earning 1-0 and 4-0 victories.

Overall, Decorah went 6-1 at the Waverly Tournament.  "To be able to play seven games and only give up two goals and hang six shutouts is pretty outstanding," said coach Julie Shockey-Trytten.
