Viking girls are NE Iowa Conference track champions again

For the 15th year in a row, the Decorah Viking girls track team has won the Northeast Iowa Conference girls track championships.
The Vikings turned in a dominating performance in Cresco, beating Charles City 155 to 109. Waverly and Crestwood were close behind Charles City, with 103.5 and 102.5 points, respectively. Waukon, New Hampton and Oelwein rounded out the finishers.
Decorah had five first place finishes--four in relay events and one individual event. The Vikings started the meet by winning the 800 Sprint Medley, with Grace Syverson, Grace Thompson, Brooke Berns and Amanda Kuehner crossing the finish line in 1:55.94. The Viking team of Cassie Wyatt, Grace Thompson, Ellie Luzum and Leila Johnson won the Distance Medley event with a time of 4:31.56. Brooke Berns won the 400 meter dash shortly after the relay event, finishing in 58.46 seconds. The 4x200 meter relay team of Amanda Kuehner, Brielle Buresh, Grace Thompson and Rose Gullekson finished first with a time of 1:49.13. The 4x400 meter relay team of Brooke Berns, Brielle Buresh, Emma Nierengarten and Cassidy Garolan took first place in the final track event with a time of 4:16.80.
The Vikings also had three second place finishes--the 4x100 meter shuttle hurdle team of Grace Syverson, Anya Lovstuen, Kallie Mincks and Ambria Pipho finished in 1:09.72; Rose Gullekson finished second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.67 seconds; and Grace Syverson, Cassie Wyatt, Rose Gullekson and Grace Thompson finished second in the 3x100 meter relay with a time of 52.61 second.
Fresh off their conference championship, the Vikings will head to Regionals on Thursday in Charles City, with invitations to the State Track & Field Meet on the line.
