The Decorah Viking girls tennis squad came close to taking the title at the North Central Conference Meet in Decorah on Tuesday, but came up just short with 37 points to 40 points for Waverly.

Decorah had four first place finishes, two second place finishes and three third place finishes in the six-team field.  In singles play, Mara Frieden won 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 and 4-2 to take first place at #1 singles.  At #4 singles, Cady Peterson won by scores of 6-0, 6-0, 4-2, 6-0 and 3-3.  Frieden and Alli Groux won at #1 doubles by scores of 5-3, 6-2, 8-0, 8-0, 3-5.  At #6 singles, Payton Schutte won 5-1, 5-1, 5-1, 6-0 and 4-2.

The other two doubles teams to second place finishes.  Cady Peterson and Morgan Brauer at #2 doubles won 5-3, 7-1, 8-0 and 8-0 before losing a 3-5 decision.  Payton Schutte and Mya Herrman at #3 doubles went 4-4, 7-1, 8-0, 7-1 and 5-3 to also finish second.

Third place finishes were earned by Alli Groux at #2 singles, Soleil Smith at #3 singles and Morgan Brauer at #5 singles.

Weather conditions affected the number of games played, so the Vikings were in a situation where players had to play well in each game.  Head coach Larry Berland said, "It becomes imperative that you play well against everyone in your flight."

Decorah will play in Independence on Monday, in Waverly on Thursday, at home against Union/La Porte City on Friday before playing the first two rounds of Regionals on Saturday, May 12th.  Says Berland, "I hope the weather will cooperate and let us get them all in."
