For some of us in Northeast Iowa, it's difficult to imagine spring sports have begun with all the snow on the ground, but practice has started for the girls track and field team of Decorah.
Co-head coach Brad Johansen says, "We have a team that is highly motivated for the 2019 season. We will have many girls vying for relay and individual events when we reach the championship portion of our schedule." Johansen and head coach Cristy Nimrod along with assistant coach Mike Tangen have begun practices with their team.
"We need all girls to be confident in themselves, positive everyday, commit to be their best and celebrate the good things they accomplish. If they do these four simple things they will have a great track season and will be better athletes and people when it is complete," says Johansen.
Last year the team finished with first place in the Northeast Iowa Conference and at Regionals, and had a fifth place finish at the State Meet.
This year's team is a contender for more of the same. "We believe we will have a strong team to compete for the conference title. Every conference team will have strong individual performers. Time will tell how the depth of each team presents itself. We have a very exciting group of athletes to watch who represent the strong tradition of Decorah Girls Track and Field. Ultimately our success hinges on being healthy, having daily practice, and competing in all of our meets. When all three of those align, we have the potential to be very good," shared Johansen.
