NST swims at state championships

Northeastern Swim Team participated in the 2019 ISI Short Course Age Group State Championships at Wellmark YMCA in Des Moines, Iowa on Thursday, February 14th - Sunday, February 17th. Many area swimmers qualified to participate, and competed in this state meet.

10 year old Jaylee Vobr earned 127 team points in four days for NST. She had many highlights in this meet including:

  --1st place winner in both the Girls 10 & Under 50 yard Butterfly with a time of 32.22 and the Girls 10 & Under 100 yard Butterfly with a time of 1:11.68.
   --2nd place in the Girls 10 & Under 500 yard Freestyle race with a time of 6.16.64.
   --5th in the Girls 10 & Under 100 yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:32.15 and in 200 Yard Individual Medley with a time of 2.47.20.
   --6th in the Girls 10 & Under 200 yard Freestyle with a time of 2:24.27.
   --7th in the Girls 10 & Under 100 yard Freestyle with a time of 1:06.85.
   --8th in the Girls 10 & Under 100 yard Backstroke with a time of 1:17.27.
   --11th in the Girls 10 & Under 50 yard Freestyle with a time of 30.38.

Margaret Rhodes qualified for Sectionals with the time of 1:00.99 on the 13-14  100 yard Butterfly and placed 7th in the final with a time of 1.00.54. Likewise, her 200 yard Butterfly placed 14th with a final time of 2:22.50.

Cole Huebner placed 5th place in the 13-14  50 yard Freestyle race with a time of 23.03, and qualified for finals in all seven individual races. He placed 8th with a final time of 55.78 in the Boys 13-14 yr 100 yard Butterfly and 200 yard Butterfly with a time of 2:08.33. His Boys 13-14  200 yard Individual Medley placed 12th with a time drop of 4.59 second and a finishing time of 2:09.15. In the Boys 13-14 200 yard Freestyle he placed 11th with a time of 1:53.67, and 7th in the 100 yard Freestyle with a time of 51.46.

Sydney Thompson placed 4th in the Girls 10 and under 50 yard Breaststroke with a time of 40.68. She placed 11th place on the 10 and under Girls 100 Freestyle dropping 4.98 seconds and 12th place in the Girls 10 & Under 50 yard Backstroke in 38.10 seconds. Her 10 and under 50 yard Freestyle, with a time of 31.21, placed 15th and her 100 yard Breaststroke placed 11th with a time of 1:33.82.

Dominic Bigalk placed 10th in the 11-12 Boys 1000 yard Freestyle with a time of 11:55.13 and 12th in the 500 yard Freestyle with a time of 5:48.04. On the 11-12 Boys 200 yard Backstroke race he placed 15th with a time of 2:33.65 and 9th on the 400 yard Individual Medley with a time of 5:26.39.

Topher Bigalk placed 14th in the 200 yard Breaststroke with a time of 2:29.49 and 15th in the 100 yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:07.62. He also placed 15th in the 13-14 200 yard Backstroke with a time of 2:15.00.

Ten year old Avalea Burns placed 7th in the Girls 10 and under 50 yard Breaststroke with a time of 41.52 and 15th in the Girls 10 and Under 100 yard Individual Medley with a time of 1:23.89. Her eight year old brother Dane placed 13th in the 10 and under Boys 50 yard Freestyle improving his time by 2.39 seconds with a finish of 37.74.

Carson Hager competed in the Boys 11-12 50 yard Breaststroke final and placed 6th with a time of 36.31. He also placed 8th in the 100 yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:20.26 and 9th in the 200 yard Breaststroke with a time of 2:56.28. He  placed 14th in the 100 yard Individual Medley with a time of 1:12.37.

Nine year old Anna Knaack placed 13th in the Girls 10 and under 100 yard Butterfly by dropping 7.78 seconds and finishing with a time of 1:29.08.

Katerina Kovarik placed 14th in the 13-14 Girls 1650 yard Freestyle with a time of 19.42.91 dropping 29.96 seconds.

Lauren Luzum placed 15th in the Girls 10 and Under 200 yard Freestyle with a time of 2:36.01.

The NST Girls 10 & under 200 yard relay of Sydney Thompson, Lauren Luzum, Avalea Burns and Jaylee Vobr placed 4th with a time of 2:07.11, and earned 2nd place with a time of 2:24.49 in the girls 200 yard Medley Relay.

NST 10 & under boys Weston Cote, Bentley Hager, Dane Burns, and Isaak Kovarik placed 7th in the 200 yard Medley Relay with a time of 2:38.33. The relay of Isaak Kovarik, Weston Cote, Dane Burns and Garrett Vobr placed 8th in the 200 yard Free Relay with a time of 2:18.22.

13-14 Boys 800 yard Freestyle relay of Isaac Knaack, Cole Huebner, Topher Bigalk and Max Maitland placed 7th with a time of 8:04.85. These boys also placed 7th in the 13-14 200 yard Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:39.69, 8th in the 13-14 Boys 400 yard Freestyle Relay with a time of 3:41.33. They placed 9th in the 13-14 Boys 200 yard Medley Relay with a time of 4:04.75 and 7th in the 13-14 Boys 400 yard Medley Relay.

The 13-14 Girls 800 yard Free Relay of Margaret Rhodes, Katerina Kovarik, Paige Werner and Joey Vobr placed 11th with a time of 8:38.11 and the relay team of Margaret Rhodes, Katerina Kovarik, Julia Alberts and Paige Werner placed 15th in the 400 yard free Relay with a time of 4:22.46. The relay team of Paige Werner, Katerina Kovarik, Margaret Rhodes and Maeley Nefzger placed 13th in the Girls 13-14 200 yard Free Relay with a time of 1:46.60, and 15th in the Girls 13-14 200 yard Medley Relay with a time of 2:00.61.
 
NST earned 647.5 points ranking 10th in the state behind many significantly larger swim teams such as Central Iowa Aquatics which placed 1st, and Greater Des Moines YMCA which placed 2nd.

15 and up swimmers Drew Chamberlain and Jackson Penny competed February 21, 2019 - February 24, 2019 also at Wellmark YMCA. Drew Chamberlain placed 12th in the Mens 1000 yard Freestyle by dropping 20.63 seconds and finishing with a time of 10.36.29. Jackson Penny placed 15th in the Mens 200 yard Individual Medley with a time of 2:06.35 and19th in the Mens 200 yard Breaststroke with a time of 2:20.41.

NST will begin registration for the Long Course season in March.
