The Decorah Viking wrestling team had a good day Saturday at the District Wrestling Meet, with three of its four wrestlers qualifying for the State Wrestling Tournament.

Jackson Rolfs finished in first place at 132 pounds, while Dawson Palmer at 182 pounds and Andy Murphy at 195 pounds finished as District runners-up.  Austin Wilkins didn't qualify for the State Tournament at 106 pounds, but still finished with a good season.

Head Coach Jeff Freidhof called it "a strong day for us as a program," adding, "We had a great week of training leading into the weekend and the wrestlers had the right mental mind sets and it showed on Saturday."

Freidhof was especially happy with Jackson Rolfs' performance in recording major decisions against two high quality opponents.  Dawson Palmer had two falls in three matches to punch his ticket to Des Moines. Said Freidhof, "He is the type of wrestler that opponents don't want to have at Wells Fargo and we are excited about that."

Freidhof also praised Andy Murphy, whose constant attacking allowed him to turn a tied match into a fall in the first round, saying Murphy "is a role model for younger athletes to set your goals and work your tail off to accomplish them."  And Freidhof said while Austin Wilkins didn't qualify this year, he has a bright future ahead. "He wrestled his heart out on Saturday and has demonstrated so much improvement over the year that we can't wait to get him competing again next season," said Freidhof.
