On Friday night the Decorah Viking boys basketball team traveled to Charles City and just missed victory by 4 points.
Charles City led at the end of the first quarter. 14-9. In the second quarter Charles City outscored Decorah 25-19 to take a 39-28 halftime lead. In the third quarter the Vikings reduced the margin to 9 points, trailing 52-43. Decorah outscored Charles City in the fourth quarter, 28-23, but it wasn't quite enough as Charles City won the game with a final score of 75-71.
Junior Matthew Franzen was the leading scorer for Decorah with 16 points, including four 3-point baskets. Sophomore Charlie Robinson had 13 points, including three 3-point baskets. Junior Pat Bockman scored 11 points, and junior Sam Robinson scored 10 points.
"We didn't have the consistent aggressive mindset needed on the road against a good Charles City team," said head coach Jonathan Carlson. He added, "We played better at times in the 3rd and 4th quarters, but not consistently enough to earn a victory on the road. As I told our guys, this season is a marathon not a sprint, we will keep improving and our best is yet to come."
Decorah is now 4-6 overall and 3-3 in NEIC play. The Vikings return to action Monday night against Spring Grove.
