After the senior members of the Decorah cross country team were honored, the Viking football team ran out to an early first quarter lead and never looked back, as Decorah beat the visiting West Delaware Hawks by a score of 28-13 to improve to 5-2 on the year as West Delaware drops to 2-5.

The first quarter was the Drake Shelton show, as Shelton scored two touchdowns, one on a 48-yard run, and another on a 17-yard swing pass from quarterback Jace Johnson to make the score 14-0 in the Vikings' favor.

The second quarter was no better for the visiting Hawks, as the Vikings offense and defense continued to dominate. A 65-yard run by Clay Johansen took Decorah out of the shadow of its own end zone and set up a 14-yard touchdown pass from Jace Johnson to senior tight end Carson Baumler to make the score 21-0 with 9:39 to go in the half.  After a defensive stop, the Vikings would use a slow, methodical drive that was capped by a one-yard touchdown pass to Tanner Knutson to make the game 28-0 at the half.

After lightning delayed the start of the second half by about half an hour, both teams played an even third quarter, with the only scoring opportunity for either team being when Decorah fumbled at the West Delaware one-yard line, a ball recovered by the Hawks, who were not able to score, however.

The Vikings were able to put some members of their second string into the game on both sides of the ball during the second half.

The Hawks' offense finally got going in the fourth quarter, entering the red zone for the first time all game, thanks to big runs by sophomore running back Cael Meyer. The six-minute, 89-yard drive was capped off by quarterback Nick Casey's one-yard touchdown run.

Meyer would break a big 82-yard touchdown run with 15 seconds left that made the final score 28-13 in favor of Decorah.

The Vikings will travel to Waterloo next Friday to take on the Waterloo East Trojans, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
