The Cedar Rapids Xavier football team showed Friday night why it is the defending champion in Class 3A in Iowa, dominating the Decorah Vikings by scoring 45 consecutive points from the second quarter on.

Vikings started off well in the first quarter, keeping the Xavier offense in check.  But when the Vikings were on offense, a fourth down hike went over the head of kicker Cameron De Long, giving the Knights the football at Decorah's 39-yard line.  The Vikes forced a Xavier fumble, Drake Shelton had a long run and De Long kicked a 35-yard field goal to give Decorah a 3-0 lead at 4:1 left in the first quarter.

The second quarter didn't go as well for the Vikings.  At 9:50 left in the first half, Xavier's Quinn Schulte scored on a 6-yard run to give the Knights a 7-3 lead.  Schulte then starting going to the air, scoring on an 18-yard pass to Matt Jorebrek with 8:07 left in the second quarter for a 14-3 Xavier lead, then connecting on a 5-yard pass to Jorebrek with 5:41 left in the first half for a 21-3 lead.  A 27-yard field goal with 19 seconds left in the first half gave Xavier a 24-3 lead heading into the locker room.

The third quarter had little offense until the closing minutes, when Xavier had an 80-yard drive, capped off by Schulte's pass to Nathan Skala at 2:11 left in the quarter to make it 31-3.  Skala then had a 66-yard punt return from Decorah with no time remaining in the third quarter to make it 38-3 Xavier.

That meant the clock started running continually in the fourth quarter.  The Vikings had a drive going into Xavier territory, but could not convert on a 4th down attempt.  Xavier scored one final touchdown in the final minute of the game.

Decorah finished with 142 yards of total offense, with Xavier earning 413 yards.  The Vikings earned just 8 first downs to Xavier's 18 first downs.  Complete game statistics are linked below.

Decorah is now 1-1 on the season.  It will travel to Epworth Friday night to face Western Dubuque in another non-district game.
