Decorah Vikings football team to take on #1 Cedar Rapids Xavier

The Decorah Viking football team will take on #1-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier at Saints Field in Cedar Rapids on Friday.  Xavier comes in to the game with a 1-0 record after defeating Iowa City Regina last Friday.  Decorah comes in to this game with a 1-0 record after defeating rival Waukon, 24-20, last Friday.

Decorah is coached by Pat Trewin, who is in his first year as head coach. Trewin succeeded longtime Viking coach Bill Post who retired after last season after 45 years in the Decorah program.

The Vikings last Friday were led by Drake Shelton with 194 rushing yards on 23 carries in Decorah's opening game against Waukon. Commenting on the game against Waukon, Trewin said, "The best stuff was our attitude through the game."

When asked by KDEC's Darin Svenson why Decorah would want to play against Xavier, Trewin commented, "We want to play good football teams. There's always a couple of reasons. Number one, they make you better. If you go out and play teams that will struggle against you, it's gonna be hard to see improvement and build yourself up to drive to get better. Our kids know if we are gonna win this game, we've got to get better. We have to play at the top of our game."

"From a playoff standpoint, if you hope to make the playoffs, you put good teams on your schedule and if you can beat them, it will help you get to that situation. If we want to be a big time team, we have to play the big boys, and we want to be that kind of program. We don't shy away from good competition," added Trewin.

The Saints defeated Decorah 21-13 in a tightly-contested game in 2017.  Xavier has an all-time record of 2-1 against Decorah.

The freshmen team will kick off at 6:00 p.m Thursday at Decorah. The sophomore game kickoff is 5:00 p.m. Friday at Xavier, with varsity kickoff at 7:15 p.m.

This game is scheduled to be broadcast on KDEC and KVIK-FM in Decorah.  Live updates will be available on Twitter from @XavierSaintsAD and @XavierSaints.
