The Decorah Vikings pulled off an exciting home opener win over Waukon on Friday night, 24-20, and handed new head coach Pat Trewin his first victory.

Decorah started out successfully with a 68 yard drive. Drake Shelton had several big runs in the drive and capped it off with a 1 yard TD run. Cameron DeLong added the first of his three extra points to give the Vikings a 7-0 lead. The teams traded possessions, but then Dawson Bauers scored on an 81 yard run for Waukon. And a 2 point conversion gave them an 8-7 lead to end the first quarter.

Decorah completed a 59 yard drive in the second quarter, again with some big plays from Drake Shelton. Quarterback Jace Johnson snapped a 1 yard touchdown pass to Tanner Knutson, and the Vikings went back on top, 14-8. But Waukon came back late in the second quarter with a 47 yard touchdown pass reception for Dawson Bauers to tie the score at 14-14.

The first half came to a dramatic last second finish when Decorah quarterback Jace Johnson did some acrobatic scrambling and went out of bounds at the Waukon 38 yard line. But a late hit by Waukon brought the ball to the 23 yard line. Then Cameron DeLong hit on a 40 yard field goal to give the Vikings a 17-14 halftime lead.

The third quarter was scoreless.  Decorah opened the fourth quarter with a 65 yard drive, capped with a 25 yard TD run by Tanner Knutson. The 24-14 lead looked good until Waukon came right back with another TD run from Dawson Bauers of 65 yards to cut the Decorah lead to 24-20.

The rain began mid-fourth quarter and things got a bit crazy.  Decorah coughed up two fumbles, but responded with interceptions by Tanner Knutson and Clay Johansen that allowed the Vikings to hold on to a 24-20 win.

Decorah travels next week to play the defending state champions, Cedar Rapids Xavier.
