Turnout has been good for the boys team

Head coach Brad Johansen is coaching the Decorah boys cross country team for his fifth season in a row.  Assistant coaches Adam Bohach and Tim Hayes have both coached the team for five years also.

Highlights from last season included first place finishes at the Northeast Iowa Conference meet, districts and a third place finish at state. In 2013 the boys finished in third place at state and were state champs in 2012. 17 seniors graduated and over 50 boys will make up the team this year, nine of those being returning letter winners.

Coach Johansen says, "I think we have a strong team. Waverly Shell-Rock and Charles City look to have very strong teams also.  All other teams in the league have quality people.  Time will tell if they have seven quality runners to field a highly competitive varsity team."

He added, "We need to improve on our daily preparation.  When we work well everyday great things happen at the end of the season. We have a very exciting group of athletes to watch who represent the strong tradition of Decorah Cross Country.  If healthy all year, we will be in the mix for conference and district titles and another trip to state.  A tremendous amount of purposeful daily work will need to be done to put ourselves in that position at the end of the year."

The Vikings will open their season with a meet at Oelwein on Tuesday, August 28th.
