Gina Holthaus is in her 4th year of coaching volleyball for Decorah High School. Her record as coach is 31-70, but her 2017 record was 12-21. Assistant coaches are Jackie Reckward, Jill Christofferson and Amy Pipho.
Coach Holthaus says, "Right now, there are a lot of underclassmen who are battling for positions. I think our practices are going to be competitive because I feel early in the season we could have a lot of different lineup looks."
Returning letter winners for the Decorah Viking volleyball team this year are seniors Allison Groux, Grace Syverson and Leah Weis, juniors Brooke Berns, Amanda Kuehner, Ambria Pipho and Kylah Quandahl.
On team strengths, Holthaus says, "We return the bulk of our back row players, so I look for them to keep the ball off the floor and give us lots of opportunities. Returning our setter is obviously also very helpful in getting the ball to our hitters. I think this group of girls really loves volleyball and will do a great job competing and pushing each other to get better every day. I think the gym will be a high intensity place--it sure was at the end of the summer." Holthaus mentioned they will be working on how quickly they can come up with a good workable lineup, and then being consistent.
Holthaus thinks Charles City, New Hampton and Waverly will be top picks in the conference. "I would like to think that we can and will battle with each of the above teams. I think this year the conference might be a little more equal from top to bottom. I believe any given night, that any team could beat any other team," added Holthaus.
"I'm excited for this season, as this group of seniors are fun to be around. They are passionate about volleyball, work hard and lead by positive example. I want us to get better each time we play, and I think these three seniors will encourage that from themselves, and their teammates."
Tuesday is the first volleyball game of the season. The Vikings will travel to Prairie Du Chien for a 7:15 p.m. match.
