The Decorah Viking baseball team finished its 2018 Northeast Iowa Conference schedule in style Tuesday night, taking a doubleheader from Crestwood.
Offense ruled in the first game as Decorah led by as many as nine runs before completing a 12-5 victory. Jackson Varney had four runs batted in, going 2-for-5 with a double. Brannan Hogan went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Kailer McCabe also went 2-for-4 with a double, scoring two runs and batting in one run.
Pitching and defense ruled in the second game as Decorah gave up two first inning runs to Crestwood, but tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning on Drake Shelton's 2-run home run and won the game in the bottom of the 7th when Jackson Varney got a hit with the bases loaded. Tom Knoke was the winning pitcher, with 7 strikeouts.
The doubleheader victory left Decorah with a 14-4 conference record--the same as New Hampton and Waverly-Shell Rock. Decorah will now play several non-conference games the rest of this week while awaiting its assignment to the postseason tournament.
