The Charles City Comet softball team had lost only twice this summer--until Thursday night in Decorah.
After beating Decorah 11-1 in six innings in the first game of a doubleheader, the Comets ran into a determined Viking squad in the second game. Charles City took a 2-0 lead in the top half of the second inning, but Decorah scored nine times in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by Avery Shelton's two-run home run.
The Comets fought back and tied the game at 9-9, but Decorah didn't quit, scoring three more runs to take a 12-9 lead which held up for the rest of the game. Decorah is now 9-17 on the season, while Charles City is 30-3.
The Vikings will have another busy week next week. Decorah will face Waverly-Shell Rock on Monday in make-ups of games suspended on June 21st because of rain. On Wednesday the Vikings will begin play in Regionals, traveling to Center Point-Urbana. If Decorah wins Wednesday, it will play again Friday at Waverly in the semifinals of Regionals.
