Needing to win twice Sunday against Illinois Wesleyan University in order to qualify for the NCAA Division III National Softball Championship game, the Luther College softball team accomplished the first half of the task on Sunday, but fell short in the second game.

The Norse defeated the Titans 5-2 in the first game, with Anna Strien hitting a two-run home run in the third inning and Samantha Bratland pitching a complete game to improve her record to 28-6. Bratland spread seven hits, walked one and struck out one.

In the second game the Norse were held to just three hits by Titans ace Ally Wiegand and dropped a 5-1 decision.

Illinois Wesleyan and Virginia Wesleyan will face each other in the championship series for the 2018 national championships Monday.

Luther finished its 2018 season with a record of 43 wins and 11 losses--the best record in the history of the softball program.  Its third place finish at the National Championships was also the best record for the Norse in the playoffs.
