Luther softball team wins its first game at the NCAA Division III Championships

The Luther College softball team advanced in the championship bracket of the NCAA III National Softball Championships thanks to a 6-3 victory over MIT Thursday afternoon in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

The Norse scored a run in the first and second innings.  They broke the game open with a three-run sixth. MIT responded in the bottom of the sixth with three runs to pull to within 5-3.  But In the top of the seventh, Luther's Addy Pender gave the Norse an insurance run with a solo blast over the left field fence.

Lead-off batter Natalie Stockman was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Bailey Victoria, Blake Banowetz, and Megan Bonnett also drove in a run. Victoria finished the afternoon 2-for4, Bonnett was 2-for-3 and scored twice and Banowetz was 1-for-4.

Samantha Bratland went the distance in the circle and improved to 26-5. Bratland allowed three runs on two hits, walked two and struck out five.

The win gives Luther a record of 41-9.  Luther faces the defending national champions, Virginia Wesleyan (50-2), at 7:00 p.m. Friday.
