The Decorah Vikings were unable to qualify any boys tennis players for the State Tournament at Saturday's Regional at Waterloo.
Decorah's Aidan Hunter drew a bye in the first round, but the rest of the Viking team had to play--and all were defeated.
Billy Lange drew the #4 seed in singles and dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision. Rex Huinker and Kaj Spencer-Berg drew the top two players from Oelwein in doubles and lost a 6-0, 6-3 decision. Joe Holland and Nate Larson drew a very athletic team from Aplington-Parkersburg and lost in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
That left Hunter still competing and he won his second round match 6-4, 6-1 with a smart and relentless attack. In the third round, Hunter could not win enough of the big points and dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision. He played in the consolation finals to close out the day and gave one of the gutsiest performances of the season to win 3-6, 6-4, (10-6 tiebreaker) and to leave the tournament with a third place medal.
