The Decorah Viking girls golf team had only a single win on the season heading into Thursday night's four-team tournament at Waverly Golf Course, but the Vikings beat Charles City and Waterloo West to finish second in the tournament and increase their season win total to three.
Waverly-Shell Rock won the tournament with a 191. Decorah was 12 strokes back at 203, but five strokes ahead of Charles City and 31 strokes ahead of Waterloo West.
Decorah's Ann Meirick was medalist for the meet with a 44. Audrey Casterton was also in the 40s with a 48. Emma Fretheim shot a 55, Olivia Fahey and Sydney Byrnes had 56s and Izzy Elwood shot an 81. One of Decorah's normal starters was out of state at a family gathering and Byrnes stepped up with a very nice score.
Said head coach Scott Pierce, "This was by far the best our gals have played this year! We go back to Waverly for the Regional Final on May 21st, so this was a very productive night for us."
