Decorah boys track and field team is conference champs for the third year in a row

It was a big victory on a beautiful night for the Vikings on Monday. The boys track and field team beat out six other teams for the title of conference champions at the NEIC championship meet in Charles City. Decorah defended their title with the highest point total for the night--182.  New Hampton followed with 144 points, Waverly Shell-Rock had 129, Oelwein 82, Waukon, 81, Charles City 66 and Crestwood 27.

Jackson Varney won the 200 meter dash with his time of 23.38, and Kyle Renken finished fifth with a time of 24.75. Jackson Varney just missed first place in the 400 meter dash by .04 seconds as he finished in second place in 52.86. Seth Shindelar was fourth with a time of 56.69.  Matthew Franzen was third in the 800 meter run finishing in 2:09.71. Jarod Phillips was fourth with a finish time of 2:11.28.

It was a first place finish in two individual events for Andrew Kephart as he won the 1600 meter run in 4:43.41 and the 3200 meter run in 10:39.62. Brady Hogan finished third in the 1600 meter in 4:51.56. Rye Hawley was second in the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:45.34.

Andrew Magner finished in second place in the 110 meter hurdles in 15.48. Clay Johansen took sixth place in the 400 meter hurdles in 1:00.38.

In the 4 x 100 meter relay the team of Jason Adam, Andrew Magner, Mikel Fullhart, and Beirgen Gunhus-Dansdill finished in third place with their time of 46.32. The 4 x 200 meter relay team of Jason Adam, Beirgen Gunhus-Dansdill, Mikel Fullhart, and Austin Myli finished in second place with a time of 1:35.11.

Jackson Varney, Austin Myli, Tyler Vande Lune, and Christian Johnson finished in fourth place in the 4 x 400 meter relay in 3:35.90. Jarod Phillips, Tyler Vande Lune, Brady Hogan, and Matthew Franzen won the 4 x 800 meter relay with their combined times of 8:35.64.

It was a third place finish for the relay team of Jason Adam, Beirgen Gunhus-Dansdill, Clay Johansen, and Austin Myli in the sprint medley as they finished in 1:40.17. The distance medley relay team of Beirgen Gunhus-Dansdill, Mikel Fullhart, Clay Johansen, and Andrew Kephart won their event in 3:44.37.

The 4 x 110 shuttle hurdle relay team of Jason Adam, Austin Myli, Clay Johansen, and Andrew Magner finished in second place with their time of 1:02.70.

In field events the Vikings also gained points. Jackson Varney won the long jump at 20 feet, 5 inches. Keaton Solberg finished fourth in the high jump at 5 feet, 8 inches. Andy Lillegraven finished fifth in the discus with a throw of 125 feet, 2 inches and fourth in the shot put at 46 feet, 9 inches. Logan Halverson was sixth in the shot put with his throw of 42 feet, 5 inches.

The district meet will be Thursday at 4:00 p.m. at Decorah. Competitors include Charles City, Center Point-Urbana, Crestwood, Independence, Vinton-Shellsburg, West Delaware and Waverly-Shell Rock. The boys will all be competing for spots at the State Track and Field meet on May 17th-19th in Des Moines at Drake stadium.
