The Decorah boys soccer team has had a busy game schedule recently, and this week is no exception.

On Thursday, both the varsity and JV squads traveled to Postville to face the Pirates, but due to torrential rain and impending thunderstorms, the JV team was not able to get their game in. The varsity squad played in a downpour and eventually secured a 6-5 victory in a penalty shoot-out after a 3-3 draw during regulation play. Goals were scored by Galen Iverson (Brayden Krivachek - assist), Bryce Bockman (Carston Krieg - assist) and Willem Hawley (Bryce Bockman - assist).

Head Coach James Garcia Prats says, "This was a crazy game that could have gone a lot of different ways. Our boys showed a lot of character coming from behind and handling a lot of adversity throughout the game. It is rare to have penalty kicks go to the 10th kicker for each team and for some of our guys it was their first ever penalty kick so I have to be proud of the grit and strong mentality they showed. Goalkeeper Avery Dugger has now come up huge in two penalty kick shootouts, so that gives the team lots of confidence as well."

On Saturday, both squads traveled to Waverly for a full day of sunshine and competetion at the Waverly Soccer Tournament. Varsity finished in second place overall after a 2-1 victory over Iowa Falls, a 2-0 victory over Waterloo Columbus, and a 8-2 loss with Ankeny. "Both our squads had a really positive weekend in Waverly. Our varsity guys did well to get to the title game and played an impressive Ankeny team who is in 3A. I know the scoreline does not look great but we definitely took some positives and some learning from that game," said Garcia Prats.
