The six teams in the North Central Girls Tennis Conference squared off at Waverly on Saturday. Waverly-Shell Rock has been riding high in girls tennis in recent years, but the Vikings gave Waverly a battle, eventually falling to second place behind the Go-Hawks.
Head coach Larry Berland praised his squad's "gritty effort," with numerous matches that were very, very close and could have gone either way--but eventually went to Waverly.
Vita Domnenko at #2 singles, Mara Frieden at #3 singles, Alli Groux at #4 singles, Mya Herrmann at #5 singles and Soleil Smith at #6 singles all finished in second, winning their matches against Charles City, Clear Lake, Oelwein and Osage. Carine Yee at #1 singles lost to both Clear Lake and Waverly to finish third.
She and partner Vita Domnenko finished second in doubles play, as did Freiden and Groux. Josie Kleckner and Cady Peterson finished third in doubles after losing to Clear Lake and Waverly.
Still, the conference meet would a good tune-up for Regionals, which is coming up in a couple of weeks in Decorah. Asked Berland about his squad, "Will they take another step forward or take an easier step backward?" Stay tuned.
