The Decorah boys tennis team got a reality check on Monday and Tuesday when they faced Waterloo Columbus and Waverly Shell-Rock, and failed to score at either meet.

"Even though we have improved significantly this season we now know how much further we need to go to compete with the best in this region.  We got a double dose of playing good opponents and playing in very windy conditions," said head coach Reg Laursen.

"The guys had a number of close sets with Columbus but couldn't quite get over the hump.  Hayden Carlson, at #6 singles, Aidan Hunter/Billy Lange and Kaj SpencerBerg/Nate Larson, in doubles, had excellent chances to win.  The additional match play of Columbus against good competition really helped them in the crunch," said Laursen

"Waverly-Shell Rock is a senior-laden team with tons of experience," said Laursen.  "This is their year if they are going to vie for a State Team title.  Rex Huinker gets the prize for winning the most games against a WSR opponent.  He played a good hard nosed match.  Once again we fought hard. We played with them and were not significantly outclassed, but couldn't string enough good points together to win many games."

On Thursday the boys will host Independence at 4:00 p.m.
