Decorah girls track and field team win Assumption Invitational over the weekend

The Decorah girls track and field team traveled to Rock Island, Illinois for the Assumption co-ed Invitational at Augustana on Saturday. 14 teams competed and Decorah finished in first place with 129 points.

Hailey Nierling took first place in shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 9.25 inches. Nierling took third place in the discus with a throw of 98 feet and 6.5 inches.

There were several first place finishes for the runners including the 800 meter shuttle hurdle relay. Rose Gullekson, Allie Hafner, Sarah Mikkelson, and Katie Nimrod won with a time of 1:50.82. The 4 x 800 meter relay won first place in 10:04.82 with Jenna Galligan, Meg Sessions, Shayla Betts, and Brooke Berns.

Ambria Pipho, Bella Knutson, Katie Bjergum, and Grace Syverson claimed first place in the 400 meter shuttle hurdles with a time of 1:12.01. First place also went to the 1600 meter distance relay team of Fiona Buresh, Rylea Ranum, Jenna Galligan, and Kaitlyn Rooney finishing in 4:45.22. The 4 x 200 meter relay team of Sarah Mikkelson, Allie Hafner, Brooke Berns, and Katie Nimrod finished in 1:46.11, first place also.

Olivia Battle took second place in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:04.10. Katie Nimrod finished first in the 400 meter hurdles in 1:06.63. Ambria Pipho was second, finishing in 1:12.83.

In the 1500 meters run Shayla Betts finished in second place in 5:15.18. It was also a second place finish for the 4 x 100 meter relay team of Fiona Buresh, Allie Hafner, Brynne Valkosky, and Rose Gullekson as they finished in 51.51. Another second place finish in the 4 x 400 meter relay concluded team points with Sarah Mikkelson, Brooke Berns, Fiona Buresh, and Katie Nimrod crossing the finish line in 4:09.00.

Head coach Cristy Nimrod had this to say about Saturday's competition, "We were pleased with our performance on Saturday.  The girls were ready to compete and did so at a high level!"

Next up for the Vikings will be an invitational at Hudson on Tuesday for the varsity team and the jv team will travel to Waukon on Tuesday.
