On Tuesday the boys and girls Decorah Viking bowling teams traveled to the Panther Lanes in Tripoli for their first match of the season, against the Denver Cyclones.
It was quite a night for the varsity boys team as they beat Denver by 801 pins. Nine strikes in a row led to one pin short of a perfect game in the fourth Baker round. Final scores were Decorah 3,172 and Denver 2,371.
The Vikings were led by Tyler Vande Lune, who had a 247 and a 235. Michael Bruening scored a 202 and a 213. Bryon Bruening bowled a 226 and a 182. Steven Baldridge had a 185 and a 202. Dawson Holkesvik had a 201 and a 164.
Coach Bruening shared that he was very, very proud of the kids, saying, "Any time you bowl over 3,000 pins, it's fantastic! Tyler Vande Lune, Michael Bruening, and Bryon Bruening were consistently in the pocket and led the way. It was a great start to the season," remarked Bruening.
The varsity girls were led by Nina Stahr, who bowled a 115 and a 157. Maddie Putnam had a 115 and a 143. Rachel Hines had a 100 and a 116. Annika Lensch bowled an 86 and a 124. Moriah Grinna had a 100 and a 102. Even though the girls showed improvement from last year, it wasn't enough to beat Denver. Final scores were Denver 1,827 and Decorah 1,738.
Coach Bruening said the girls need to work on hitting the head pin and being consistent with their shots.
The next bowling competition will be Friday, December 1st against North Fayette Valley.
