The Decorah Viking freshman football team got off to a fast start Friday night and never looked back, earning a 48-20 victory over Vinton-Shellsburg.
The freshmen scored three times in the first quarter to take a 20-0 lead. Nick Einck scored on a 5-yard run and Cael Luzum added the PAT kick to make it 7-0; Kyle Renken scored on a 32-yard run with the PAT kick failing, making it 13-0; and Drew Synder recovered a fumble in the end zone, with Nate Rolfs making the PAT kick to reach 20-0.
It was more Decorah in the second quarter as Einck scored on a 38-yard run with the PAT kick failing, pushing the score to 26-0, and Synder scored on an 8-yard run with Renken converting on a 2-point PAT run to make it 34-0 at halftime.
Decorah twice more in the third quarter on Renken's 34 yard run and his 87-yard kickoff return to make it 48-6 heading into the fourth quarter. Vinton-Shellsburg scored twice in the fourth quarter as plenty of Decorah substitutes got playing time.
On the night, Kyle Renken finished with three touchdowns--eight rushes for 68 yards and two touchdowns and the 87-yard kickoff return for a third score. The VIkings never called a pass play in the entire game. They finished with 388 all-purpose yards.
