Kally Peterson and Anna Spencer from Decorah High School have been awarded the Academic All-State Award from the Iowa Tennis Coaches Association for their senior year of tennis competition. To be considered for this award, players must be nominated by their coach and meet the following criteria: must be an Iowa high school senior, must have competed in at least 50% of their team's varsity tennis matches as well as have competed in district/sectional competition, and must have a minimum GPA of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale (or a 3.6 and have competed in state competition). Additionally, the players' coach must be a member of the Iowa Tennis Coaches Association.
Larry Berland, coach of the DHS girls' tennis team and Iowa Tennis Coaches Association representative had this to say about the recipients of this award: "Kally was a key player for the Vikings during her senior campaign, playing number one singles for the third straight year and as a member of the number two doubles team. She finished her senior year with a career singles record of 48-29 and 49-23 in doubles. She was awarded the Academic All-Conference Award in 2016 and 2017. She returned to the state singles tournament as the regional champion in her final season with the Vikings but did not place after finishing fourth in the 2016 singles draw. Kally played number one for the 2016 state qualifying team that finished third. She was also a strong competitor in the classroom, finishing her high school career with a 3.62 GPA."
"Anna was another important contributor to the Vikings' success in tennis during her senior year. She played number two singles and number one doubles for the Vikes the entire year. Both an All-Conference player and an Academic All-Conference recipient as a senior, Anna also shared the conference Sportsmanship Award in 2017. In 2017 she returned to the state doubles tournament for the second straight year and finished in fifth place after placing seventh in 2016. Anna finished her high school tennis career with a 52-23 singles record and a 56-26 doubles record. She demonstrated that a good athlete can do the job in the classroom as well, finishing with a fine 3.86 GPA."
Berland added, "Congratulations to both scholar-athletes from Decorah for representing Iowa high school tennis in a truly positive manner."
