The Decorah
Viking sophomore boys basketball team went 2-1 this past
week, defeating Waukon and Oelwein while falling to Prairie
Du Chien.
On Tuesday night the Viking sophomores took an early 16-3
lead against Waukon after one quarter and then increased it
to 25-8 at halftime. It was much of the same in the
second half as Decorah was able to control the tempo,
cruising to a 49-21 victory.
Leading all scorers with 18 points was Nick Nelson.
Josey Jewell and Bjorn Gowdy-Jaehnig each had 6 points
apiece while Jake Drost had 4. Blaise Schaeffer and
Andrew Luzum chipped in 3 points each. James Ostlie, Blake
Moen, Alek Besarovic and Jake Humpal all had 2 points apiece
while Sam Lewey had 1 free-throw.
On Friday the Viking sophomores traveled to Oelwein and came
away with an impressive 61-23 victory. Decorah led
19-7 after one quarter and then increased it to 35-8 at
halftime. The Huskies had no answer for the Vikings in the
second half either as the Vikings led 54-13 after three
quarters and closed out the game in the fourth with every
player on the roster registering at least one point.
Blake Moen and Nick Nelson led the Viking attack with 12 and
11 points respectively. Josey Jewell and James Ostlie
each had 6 points while Jake Humpal, Blaise Schaeffer, and
Patrick Winter all had 4 points. Peter Lillibridge, Andrew
Luzum, and Sam Lewey each had 3 points. Bjorn
Gowdy-Jaehnig and Alex Besarovic each had 2 points. Maynard
Newhouse rounded out the scoring with one free-throw.
Prairie Du Chien came to Decorah on Saturday and escaped
with a hard fought 51-40 victory over the Viking sophomores
at the Decorah Middle School. Both teams were
deadlocked at 11 after one quarter but the visiting
Blackhawks were able to separate themselves a little in the
second quarter, outscoring the Vikings 19-8, to take a 30-19
halftime lead. In the second half both teams traded
baskets, and the Vikings were able to chip away, trimming
the Blackhawk lead to 38-31 heading into the fourth and
final quarter. With 5 minutes to play Decorah was able to
trim the lead to 40-34 but that is as close as they would
get as Prairie was able to make enough plays and free-throws
down the stretch, claiming a 51-40 victory.
Grant Schwartz led the charge for the Vikings with 12
points. Not far behind was Nick Nelson with 9 while Blake
Moen had 7. Jake Humpal and James Ostlie scored 6 and 4
points respectively while Patrick Winter had 2 points to
round out the scoring.
"It was good to get two conference wins and keep that streak
going, but thought we didn't come out aggressive enough
against a good Prairie Du Chien team and they took it to us
and when we recovered it was too late," commented head coach
Jonathan Carlson. "Hopefully this will make the guys a
bit more hungry heading into our final three games of the
year," added Carlson.
The Vikings are 14-4 overall and 9-0 in the Northeast Iowa
Conference. The Vikings are scheduled to play their
last home game on Tuesday, hosting New Hampton at 6:15 p.m.
They then are scheduled to travel to Cresco on Friday, with
tip-off also scheduled at 6:15 p.m. |
