Sophomore boys head back to action Tuesday
The Decorah High School sophomore boys basketball team will return to action at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday at home against Waukon.  The Vikings are now 12-3 overall and 7-0 in the NEIC after beating Charles City 42-16 and Turkey Valley 48-32 last week.

Against Charles City on Tuesday, both teams were deadlocked at 7-7 after one quarter but a stingy Viking defense forced five straight Comet turnovers, which led to a 23-2 run, as they took a commanding 30-9 halftime lead.  Neither team was able to find the basket much in the second half as Decorah only managed to score 12 points while the visiting Comets mustered only 7.  Bjorn Gowdy-Jaehnig and Jake Drost both reached double figures in scoring with 10 points apiece, while James Ostile was not far behind with 9 points. Also scoring for the Vikings was Peter Lillibridge with 3 while Nick Nelson and Alek Besarovic had 2 points apiece. Jake Drost led the way on defense with 5 steals while also dishing out a team high 4 assists.

On Thursday Turkey Valley traveled to Decorah to take on the Viking sophomores.  Decorah led 9-7 after one quarter and was able to increase their lead to 18-11 at halftime.  In the second half, the Vikings were able to increase their lead to 30-18 with 3 minutes to play in the 3rd quarter, but Turkey Valley was able to cut into the lead trimming it to 33-24 to end the quarter.  In the fourth quarter, Decorah was able to increase their lead to 43-27 with 3 minutes to play and never looked back, cruising to a 48-32 victory.

Nick Nelson scored a season high and game high 17 points, including 4 three-pointers. James Ostile and Bjorn Gowdy-Jaehnig each missed double figures with 9 and 8 points respectively. Blake Moen chipped in 6 points while Jake Drost had 4. Rounding out the scoring on the evening was Andrew Luzum and Alek Besarovic who had 3 and 2 points respectively. Drost once again led the way with 4 assists while tying Gowdy-Jaehnig for steals with 4. Jewell cleared the boards with 7.

"Although we weren't real efficient on the offensive end of the floor at times, I thought the guys really defended well in these two games which created other opportunities for us to score especially in transition," commented head coach Jonathan Carlson.
